What it is

Four booklets for when you're stuck.

A series of four folding booklets for designers: font, grid, concept and message. Each one opens with the question “Stuck?”, gives a short checklist and examples, and closes with the same promise: yours will be excellent, fun-tactic!

Font

How many fonts do you need? Four roles are usually enough: title, running text, information and display. The booklet walks through the hierarchy, a five-point checklist (right for the job, the size, the style, the character of the concept and its role) and a size sheet to test with.

Grid

How to build a grid, how it holds the page, and when you are allowed to break it. Then comes “go wild”: examples from design history that show the grid giving freedom, not only limits.

Concept

How closely should I stick to the brief? From one idea to many ideas, and from a mind map to the one idea that holds the whole piece together.

Message

What do we actually want to say, and how do we make sure it lands. A checklist, the dos and don'ts, and a small tip at the end.

A sustainable brand born from a connection to the earth and to nature.

01The idea

A legume brand that speaks about nature.

The first step was to imagine a sustainable brand for legumes, where the whole brand and its mindset would speak of a connection to nature. From there I began designing the logo. The first association was the market, the bazaar where spices and pulses stand in sacks.

02The shape

A market sack, made for today.

Then I tried to imagine the shape, the look and the feel the product would take. In my head were the sacks that stand in the market, but useful and current today. On the one hand biodegradable and harmless to the environment, on the other modern and up to date.

03The language

One language, each product its own.

Once it was all clear in my imagination I moved on to making it: the stage where the products get one shared language and are still told apart. The legume plant drawn by hand, the product name set large, and the line “this package can be reused or planted”.

04The material

A biodegradable sack that looks painted.

The materiality, the look and the feel came from the Arab markets and bazaars. So I decided to make a biodegradable sack that looks as if it was painted on, that is nice to walk the street with, and that still carries the brand's values. The most basic idea for a biodegradable brand is that it can connect back to nature.

05The result

A sack that goes back to the earth.

In the end it became a finished product: it can be reused or planted, carried around as a fashionable bag, and the nutritional values of each product can be scanned from the QR code printed on it. And the result was satisfying.
